WHO IS MISS HEMSING?
"Teachers have three loves: love of learning, love of learners, and the love of bringing the first two loves together."
-Scott Hayden
WHY I WANT TO BECOME A K-12 TEACHER
I decided to go back to University and work toward my Bachelor of Education, after gaining experience working as a Personal Trainer. While working as a Personal Trainer, I learned that I was passionate about educating my clients on the various components that contribute toward their health. I loved being involved in their personal health journeys, and I enjoyed watching them grow both mentally and physically throughout the process. I decided to transition from Personal Training to Teaching, because I wanted to use my skills to positively impact today's youth. Additionally, the many similarities between working as a Personal Trainer and a School Teacher made me feel confident that deciding to go back to University for my BEd was the right decision.
After a discussion with a close friend one day, I found myself reflecting on Who I am, and the skills that I have to contribute to the world. I am a very patient, empathetic, and hard working individual that enjoys contributing to my community and being challenged. I believe that challenges are opportunities to grow and become a better individual. Throughout Field III, I learned that my personality, traits, skills, and mindset will be assets throughout my teaching journey. Specifically my skills, competencies and attitudes will help me toward my goal of teaching Middle School.
Field III was an important step in my teaching journey. It provided me with the opportunity to implement my understandings taken from the theory taught in my university courses, to practical uses with students in the classroom. I have learned from practicing both effective and not so effective teaching methods and classroom engagement strategies, and I have grown into a more confident teacher. I am eager to continue learning and growing during the next step of my teaching journey!

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Teachers are valued and respected leaders within the communities that we are involved in. It is important that we embody the attitudes that we expect of our students so that we lead by example. A few of the characteristics that I strive to embody and celebrate include: adaptability, inclusivity, empathy, respect, and compassion. My everyday attitude and classroom climate will mirror the expectations that I have of every individual involved in my classroom community.
I believe student-teacher relationships are the foundation for all other contributions of learning that occur within the classroom. By creating meaningful relationships with my students, I will make informed decisions that positively affect their learning. After building trusting relationships with my students, they will feel comfortable sharing their struggles and successes, thus contributing to their learning. By understanding my students, I will create an engaging and authentic environment that they look forward to participating in.
Every decision that I make as a teacher prioritizes my students learning. Seeking and implementing feedback, participating in lifelong personal development opportunities, and collaborating with my peers and mentors, are strategies that I will consistently pursue to improve. Mistakes are welcomed within my classroom because they opportunities to grow. The attitudes, skills, and competencies developed through the messy process of learning are celebrated and emphasized when assessing student learning.
